If you are looking to enhance the security of your new (or not new) Toyota 4Runner, the Console Vault 1037 is by far the best option for you. It changes your center console into an easy to use, and easy to access safe in minutes with high strength steel. If you need something bigger, I would recommend the SecureIt Agile Model 40.
For more options, or for links to each of my six recommendations for your 4Runner, read on!

- Custom fit to your vehicle
- High gauge steel
- Hidden away in your vehicle
- High quality locking mechanisms
- Not available for all vehicles
- Lock: Key or roller lock
- Dimensions: Varies by application
- Steel: 12 gauge
- Fire Rating: N/A

Console Vault has been around for quite some time! They are also the industry leader in high-quality gun safes that replace your console with lockable storage.
The 1037 has been explicitly built to fit perfectly in a 4Runner from 2010 until the end of the generations. This means that if you own a 5th-generation Toyota 4Runner, it will work for you!
These custom-built safes offer an easy installation of a steel-constructed safe, pry-resistant door, drill-resistant locks, and a lifetime warranty. Now, these are by no means cheap, but they offer some of the best protection against thieves out there, as they are not only but also hidden.
2. Lock’er Down LD2048

- Many lock options to choose from
- Great steel gauge
- Doesn't take up additional space in vehicle
- Not available for all vehicles
- Expensive
- Lock: Combo, Tubular Key, Abloy Key Lock, or E-Lock
- Dimensions: Varies by application
- Steel: 12 gauge
- Fire Rating: N/A
- Weight: Varies by application
If you want something similar to the Console Vault above but a different locking mechanism. You should think about getting yourself a Lock’er Down LD2048. This is the same basic idea as the Console Vault. However, it offers 12 gauge steel, is made in the USA, and has different lock selections.
On the locking mechanism side, you can choose from a standard 4-digit lock, a 7-sided tubular key lock, an Abloy key lock (what the police use), or even an electronic locking mechanism. Having these additional selections sets this one out of the industry.
3. SecureIt Fast Box Model 40

If you are on a budget, need to store a rifle in your vehicle, and want something high quality, then the Model 40 is a terrific option. Not only will this work well (and can be bolted into) for your 4Runner, but it can also be removed and placed in your home (upright or horizontal).
The safe also offers SecureIt’s cradle grid technology, so if it is in the vertical position, it can store more than just firearms when you install bins and more.
It is also straightforward to open by using SecureIt’s electronic keypad or by utilizing the provided key backup. If you are looking for a simple, high-quality solution, I highly recommend this one.
4. SnapSafe Under Bed Safe (Large)

- Fits larger firearms
- Great alternative to large safe
- Fits under your bed
- Not able to fit on nightstand
- Not quite as quick access as other options
- External Dimensions: 40″ Wide by 6″ High by 22″ Deep
- Internal Dimensions: N/A
- Weight: 105 pounds
Alright, the first two safes on this list are specific to the 4Runner; however, there are other safes on the market that are built to be universal and still make excellent vehicle safes.
The second one that comes to mind (outside of the Fast Box above) is the Snapsafe Underbed Safe. While its name says it is more for going under your bed, it also can be placed in the cargo area of your 4Runner.
The Under Bed Safe offers 14 gauge steel, a pry-resistant door, and a Snapsafe-specific electronic lock with a key backup.

Suppose you are searching for an excellent, smaller, under-the-seat, thick steel mechanical locking mechanism safe for your vehicle. In that case, you probably should stop right here.
The Fort Knox PB4 is explicitly built for sitting under the seat of your vehicle (with the front-facing door). It also offers an industry-leading 10 gauge steel and uses one of my favorite locking mechanisms, the Simplex Lock (which all Fort Knox pistol safes have).
This safe is backed by one of my favorite safe companies, Fort Knox, which backs its products up with a lifetime warranty and makes some of the best quality safes on the market.
I’m serious when I say if you are looking for something like this, there really isn’t anything better out there.

Are you hoping to keep multiple long guns in the rear of your 4Runner? The Hornady Rapid Safe is a great option. Not only does it allow you to stack up to three rifles on top of each other (safely), but it also gets you into the safe quickly by utilizing RFID technology.
You can unlock the safe with a provided keychain, bracelet, or electronic keypad or open it with a key backup.
You can connect this safe to your vehicle by tying it down via a cable with the unit. Remember that this safe is only 16 gauge steel, so you won’t want to leave your firearms in this one for extended periods.
What do you need out of a good safe for your 4Runner?
1. Quick access lock
The first thing you will want to consider is how quickly you need access to your firearms. Suppose you are the type of person who only needs access to their guns while they are at the range but not in an emergency. In that case, you can get away with a more complex access safe.
On the other hand, if you like to take their 4Runner off-roading or camping in bear country, you will want a safe that is easy to access in an emergency. This might mean choosing a console safe over an under-seat safe or selecting a safe with an electronic keypad over a mechanical lock.
2. High quality build
The next thing you will want to consider is the quality of the safe. This will directly relate to how much you are willing to spend on a safe. If you are looking for a cheap option, you will have to sacrifice some quality.
On the other hand, if you are willing to spend a little bit more money, you can get a safe made out of thicker steel, which has a better-locking mechanism and is, overall, a higher quality product.
3. Size and capacity
The final thing you will want to consider is the size of the safe. This is going to be directly related to how many firearms you want to be able to store in the safe. If you only need to store a few handguns, you can get away with a smaller safe.
On the other hand, if you want to be able to store multiple long guns, then you are going to need a larger safe.
Conclusion
There are a few great options if you are looking for a 4Runner gun safe. It just comes down to your needs, where you want the safe to be, and your budget.
No matter what safe you choose, just make sure you are taking steps to secure your firearms while in your vehicle.
