Need to move a gun safe? These 4 ways are BEST!

You decide you want to buy a gun safe, or worse, you purchased it, and it is sitting on your curbside, only to realize you have no idea how you will get it into your home.

Gun safes are challenging to move, especially since they range from 300 pounds (or less) to over 2000 pounds and more. So, how can you haul a gun safe effectively and, more importantly, safely? That is what we are going to be talking about in this article.

1. Moving companies

The first and easiest way to do this is by hiring a moving company. A well-equipped moving company will help you get your safe from the curbside, or you can even ship it to them and have them deliver it (the final-mile service). If you are going this route, you want to keep an eye on a couple of things:

  1. Firstly, discuss exactly what you are moving when scheduling the move. Only some moving companies can handle the size and weight of something like this; discussing this beforehand will keep you from having issues. A great thing to discuss with them is how many gun safe moves they have done in the past. If their answer is anything other than “many,” you should move on.
  2. Secondly, make sure that they are entirely insured. Most good moving companies will be licensed and insured. If they aren’t, I will pass over them. Gun safes are enormous and can be dropped or run into things or walls. If they aren’t insured, you are out of luck if they damage your property while moving it.

2. Use a Gun safe retailer.

Many local gun safe retailers and online retailers can set you up for in-home delivery. It is similar to utilizing a moving company; however, the retailer handles all the logistics and behind-the-scenes things you usually would have to deal with. Over the years, they have built great partnerships with companies that can handle moving into a home like this.

That said, you will still want to thoroughly research the retailer you purchase from and the company they use to move the safe into your home.

3. Moving it yourself

Moving a gun safe yourself can prove to be quite tricky. They are incredibly dense and top-heavy, and in most safes, you can’t remove the door to make them lighter. Let’s go over a couple of options if you decide to take this upon yourself.

  1. Firstly, if you are only moving it from one part of the house to the other, on the same floor, you can use dowels and roll it along the bottom. This is an ancient technique and can work for you.
  2. Secondly, there are shoulder straps you can use, which distribute the weight evenly between two different people, and they are carried from one place to the other. This isn’t an overly great option, especially if it is heavier than, say, 300 pounds.
  3. Thirdly, a furniture hand truck. If you go this route, buy a hand truck that can handle your moving weight. If you overload one of these, it will just make things worse.

4. Get a Modular Gun Safe

The final option for moving your gun safe, is to purchase a modular safe! These safes can be moved easily into a home with just one or two people as they arrive in pieces and are built at the final resting place of the safe. Here are some of my favorites!

Conclusion

If you want to move a gun safely, hiring a professional is what I recommend. Do your homework, and make sure you or anyone gets hurt. If you plan on doing it yourself, ensure you stay safe and don’t hurt yourself. You may have never moved something this heavy before, and be prepared for that.
